About the Authors

Arindam K. Bhattacharya is a partner of The Boston Consulting Group's New Delhi office, and coleader of the firm's Global Advantage initiative.

Arindam is part of the global team that leads BCG's Industrial Goods practice and leads the practice for BCG in India with special interest in the automotive industry. He has worked with several emerging global challengers from India in their globalization efforts and MNCs in their efforts to enter, expand, or leverage India. Arindam has coauthored numerous BCG reports including:

Arindam earned his Ph.D. and master's in manufacturing and engineering from the University of Warwick, a bachelor's in engineering from IIT in Kharagpur, India, and an M.B.A. from the IIM in Ahmedabad, India.

James W. Hemerling is a senior partner of The Boston Consulting Group's San Francisco office, coleader of its Global Advantage initiative, and a core member of its Strategy and Operations practices. Until recently, he was managing director of BCG Greater China, based in Shanghai.

Jim joined BCG in 1990 after working as an engineer. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from the University of British Columbia and an M.B.A. with distinction from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He has also studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Harold L. Sirkin is senior partner of The Boston Consulting Group's Chicago Office, where he has been for the past 27 years. He is the global leader of BCG's Operations practice. Prior to this, he was the global leader for BCG's E-commerce and Information Technology practices. Hal has extensive experience across a wide range of topics and industries and across all major geographies.

Hal is the coauthor of the book, Payback: Reaping the Rewards of Innovation, named one of BusinessWeek's ten best books on innovation for 2007 and published in 2006 by Harvard Business School Press. He has also coauthored several BCG reports including:

Hal earned his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, first in class, and a B.S. from The Wharton School, summa cum laude. He is also a CPA.
